He did.
But not high enough -- by his own standards or that of his championship team, Hendrick Motorsports.
For the second straight year, a 19th-ranked Earnhardt will miss the Chase for the Sprint Cup 10-race playoff. He hasn't won a race in two years and has only two top-five finishes this season. His best showing was runner-up in the season-opening Daytona 500 in February.
While two of his teammates challenge for the season title, the 35-year old Earnhardt -- NASCAR's Most Popular Driver -- is again left to explain his underachieving ways.
"I don't really know what the answer is to make ourselves better yet, but hopefully in the next couple of months we can figure out some of those things," a resigned Earnhardt said after qualifying ninth for Saturday's Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
