September 2010 Sales: What the Headlines Don?t Tell You

September’s sales numbers sure look good! Toyota division sales jumped 20 percent, the Ford brand was up nearly 50 percent, and the Chrysler brand saw a stunning 92-percent gain. Lest we just dump these numbers out of context, the percentages refer to the change from the brands’ sales during this month last year. Anything of [...]

McMurray beats Chasers to victory

Jamie McMurray claimed his third win of the season by beating title contenders Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson on Saturday night at Charlotte. The Earnhardt Ganassi driver worked his way up in the order from the early laps of the race and was able to stay in close contention at the front, leading the race for the first time on lap 179 after running out of sequence with the leaders by staying out during the fifth caution of the day. McMurray ultimately lost the lead to Johnson but remained among the frontrunners when the final caution of the race waved for debris on the track with 25 laps to go

Jimmie Johnson's Third Place Increases His Championship Lead

Jimmie JohnsonCONCORD, N.C. -- It may have been a familiar car up front in Saturday's Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but it was hardly just another hum-drum NASCAR championship effort.

Jimmie Johnson finished third behind winner Jamie McMurray and the night's most dominant driver, Kyle Busch, and still extended his NASCAR Sprint Cup championship lead to 41 points over second place Denny Hamlin. Most disconcerting to his competition is the fact the four-time defending series champ scored the finish despite an early race spin, pit road collision and uncharacteristic pit stop bobble.

"Ah, Superman; he woke up,'' Busch said at one point midway through the race while exchanging the lead with Johnson, who had just overcome a series of early race setbacks.

With five races remaining in NASCAR's 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs, Johnson has clearly established himself as the odds-on favorite, man-to-beat for an unprecedented and unthinkable fifth consecutive title.

"We've had a little more drama in this situation than we would have wanted to,'' Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus offered Saturday night. Yet somehow, even nights like this haven't derailed his title hopes in the least.

Shane Hmiel in Tony Stewart's Thoughts After Victory

Shane HmielFONTANA, Calif. -- Eyes moist, Tony Stewart described an emotional Sunday that began with an update on injured USAC Silver Crown driver Shane Hmiel (right) and ended with his first victory at Auto Club Speedway.

"It's something that doesn't happen a lot in open-wheel racing," said Stewart, an accomplished dirt-track racer and a team owner in Silver Crown. "It was just a real freak accident that happened. Not many guys hit (the wall) like that. It was devastating and his injuries reflected that."

Hmiel, whose NASCAR career was halted after his third violation of the series' substance abuse policy, broke his neck and back during a race in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday. He remained in critical, but stable, condition Sunday. Despite the injuries, Stewart said Hmiel, 30, avoided paralysis.

"That made us sigh in relief," Stewart said. "He made it through the first night and that's a big step."

Hmiel went to USAC to restart his driving career -- which included one victory in the Camping World Truck Series -- after he was banned by NASCAR four years ago. When he arrived in USAC three years ago, Stewart admitted he didn't know quite what to expect.

Ashley Phalen Killed in Driving Experience Crash at Auto Club Speedway

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) -- A woman crashed a replica Indy race car into a wall at a high rate of speed and died while taking part in the Mario Andretti Driving Experience at a Southern California motor speedway.

The San Bernardino County coroner's office says 24-year-old Ashley Phalen of Los Angeles was killed early Friday when her vehicle slammed into a wall and overturned at the Auto Club Motor Speedway in Fontana. She died at a nearby hospital.

Phalen was participating in what is described on andrettiracing.com as the "World's Fastest Racing Experience." The website says people can drive a race car with 600 horsepower for an eight-minute session and reach speeds up to 160 mph.

The San Bernardino Sun reported that the crash occurred at 9:32 a.m. PT Friday and that the car struck an inside wall before overturning.

An after-hours phone message for the Andretti Driving Experience wasn't immediately returned.

Mercedes shows C63 and SLS AMG specials in Australia

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Concept 358 - Click above for high-res image gallery

You may not have guessed it on your own - we probably wouldn't have, either - but Australia ranks as the fifth largest market worldwide for Mercedes-Benz. And yet all the exciting show cars are almost invariably unveiled at auto shows in the United States or Europe. You couldn't blame the Aussies for feeling neglected, so Mercedes arrived this year at the Australian International Motor Show with two special AMGs.

The first is called Concept 358, and it's essentially a tweaked C63 AMG sedan featuring the AMG Performance Plus package (which boosts the 6.3-liter V8's output up to 480hp), 19-inch alloys, special leather interior and a unique Pearl Orange paint job.

The unique SLS AMG unveiled Down Under also features a special paint scheme: in this case a unique Night Black matte-finish with red accents. They're not ground-breaking concepts, but interesting takes on some of Affalterbach's best. Details are in the press release after the jump.

McLaren: Writing drivers off ?unwise?

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh has warned rivals that it would be "unwise" to write Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton off the title battle despite their gap to the top of the standings. With only three races remaining, Hamilton is 28 points behind championship leader Mark Webber, with Button three points adrift of his team-mate. The gaps mean that the McLaren duo will need the drivers in front to endure a series of poor races in order to have a shot at the title.

TVR could make Corvette-powered 2012 comeback

1989 TVR Tasmin 400SE

Nikolai Smolenski's tenure as owner of TVR, the formerly revered maker of hairy-chested British sports cars, is nothing if not quizzical. He bought the company from late founder Peter Wheeler when it was in trouble, didn't do much with it, declared it bankrupt to clear its debts, then bought the company out of bankruptcy. Since then there's been little news save for a legal battle with a TVR remanufacturer and a couple of hints about using an American V8 to power the firm's next car.

The V8 issue has finally been decided: the Corvette's 638-horsepower LS9. The car it will go in is to be called the MD-1. A new question that has arisen, however, based on Smolenski's comment that he wants to "draw a line under the Wheeler era once and for all." Will the car be at all British? The MD-1 is being developed by a UK firm, but Smolenski says production could go to the Continent or South Africa just as easily.

Would a German-built, American-engined TVR still be a TVR like the Griffith and Chimera (or the Tasmin shown above)? Smolenski thinks TVR fans wouldn't think so, but he doesn't much care. He says, "What's important is to remain faithful to your brand values" no matter where you are. The MD-1 is expected to arrive in 2012, with just 250 made annually.

Team thrilled with Spies? rookie title

Tech 3 Yamaha boss Herve Poncharal believes Ben Spies deserves huge credit for taking rookie of the year honours in his MotoGP debut season - the American having clinched the newcomers' class with his fifth place at Phillip Island today. Although Spies arrived in MotoGP as the reigning World Superbike champion, Poncharal pointed out that he was up against the top four from last year's 250cc championship - Hiroshi Aoyama, Hector Barbera, Marco Simoncelli and Alvaro Bautista - all of whom knew the majority of circuits on the MotoGP calendar, unlike Spies. "Ben's amazing season just gets better and better," said Poncharal.

Tony Stewart's Winning Week in His Own Words

Editors Note: FanHouse is teaming up with two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart for weekly, in-depth stories as he competes in the 10-week Chase for the Sprint Cup. Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet, enters Saturday night's race at Charlotte Motor Speedway -- the fifth of the 10 playoff races -- ranked fifth in the standings, 107 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson. On Friday, FanHouse caught up with Stewart in his motor coach just before the start of final practice. Here's his personal account of a busy week starting with his second victory of the season Sunday in Fontana, Calif., followed by a major press conference Tuesday when he announced that Mobil 1 will be a primary sponsor of his car for 11 races in 2011.

CONCORD, N.C. -- We didn't get in a big hurry to leave (Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif). Probably the coolest part was I thanked all the guys and came back to the motor coach and (co-owner) Gene's (Haas) motor home was parked right next to mine.

Gene and his family were still outside and they had their own personal cameras out and they were taking pictures of the scoring pylon and it had 200 laps at the top and the running order under it.

That's the stuff that makes you feel good. I've never seen Gene have a camera in his hand, let alone his entire family. That just shows you how big a moment it was for him personally. And for me, that was the icing on the cake. That's what meant the most to me.

Darrell Waltrip's Hall of Fame Exclusion Hurts More Than Any Defeat

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Darrell Waltrip, winner of 84 races and three championships on the track, lost a popularity contest among his peers that stung more than any other defeat in his illustrious career.

Snubbed by the NASCAR Hall of Fame voting committee in his campaign to be included in the second class, Waltrip was clearly hurt by his exclusion. The color drained from his face as he watched the five names called -- David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Lee Petty, Ned Jarrett and Bud Moore -- and although he gamely spun his chair away from the podium and toward the cameras to work an hour-long, live television program, he was wounded.

Waltrip took to Twitter immediately after leaving Wednesday's announcement -- "just having a small pity party right now," he posted -- and was still smarting a day later. Instead of celebrating his selection Thursday, he played golf with younger brother Michael.

"My feelings are hurt," Waltrip told The Associated Press in a candid conversation Thursday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

"Do I take it personal? No. I can't. I couldn't live in this community if I did. I take it as that group of people that voted on those five guys had a stronger connection to their past and to those five guys than they did to me and what I did."

Report: Saab to let buyers watch their cars get built online

Saab 9-5 Production Facility

Thinking of buying a 2011 Saab? If so, you'll soon have the ability to watch it come together before your eyes; Saab is installing cameras in its Trollhättan factory. Customers will receive text messages with photos of their cars as they reach certain points in the assembly line. Eventually, Saab plans to add a real-time video feed of the cars being built. This sounds way more interesting than most reality television shows.

In addition to the cameras going in, Saab will soon offer customers the opportunity to take delivery of their cars right from the factory. The automaker says it is moving back towards building cars with a more personal touch, by manufacturing cars to order rather than churning out a steady stream of vehicles.
