Paris 2010: Peugeot HR1 Concept

In addition to pulling the sheets back on its new 508, Peugeot unveiled its newest concept at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Called the HR1 Concept, the car is what we would assume would happen if a Prius knocked boots with the SEMA world. Behind the only-a-mother-could-love face, the HR1 benefits from a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine in front and a 37-horsepower electric motor positioned in the rear of the vehicle. This is a through-the-road hybrid, which means the two powertrains operate independantly and are only connected, well, through the road. Both are bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission, and all told, the company says that the drivetrain is good for a combined "potential power" of 147 hp. Even better, fuel consumption is kept down to 3.5 liters per 100 kilometers, or around 67 mpg US.

In marketing speak, the HR1 boasts an "alternative door structure" as part of its effort to combine as many vehicle body structures as possible. Peugeot says its designers baked elements from the city car, coupe and SUV philosophies into the final look of this hybrid. Surprisingly enough, there are no current plans to bring the HR1 to life.

Paris 2010: Lotus shows off its new Grand Tourer, the Elite [w/video]

Lotus Elite Concept
Lotus Elite Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Lotus continues its march towards global sportscar domination with the 2010 Paris Motor Show unveiling of the Lotus Elite. The Elite represents a step away from "lighter is better" because it is a hefty, four-passenger grand tourer - it weighs in at 3,600 pounds. One of the reasons it's so heavy? It has a retractable, folding hardtop. Don't let the weight throw you off though, this is a good looking, aggressively styled powerhouse. Under the hood sits a modified version of the 5.0-liter V8 out of a Lexus IS-F. The unit is then massaged to produce 611 horsepower which propels the car to a sub-four-second 0-60 time and a top speed of 195 miles per hour. The Elite will also be fitted with KERS for a quick boost of recovered energy.

The front mid-engine layout should help balance the Lotus Elite and make for an exciting driving experience. We expect this car to represent a slightly softer side for the automaker, but that's like saying we expect a bomb to hurt less than a missile. The entire Lotus lineup is poised in attack position, the Elite just happens to wear clothes from the Big and Tall store.

Lotus is aiming to bring this sporty road warrior to market sometime in the year 2014. If you invest your money wisely now, you just might be able to save the estimated $180,000 you'll need to put one in your driveway. Check out the Elite in action with a video clip after the jump.

Jimmie Johnson Wins Dover Pole

DOVER, Del. (AP) -- Four-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson shook off a poor finish in the Chase opener to take the pole at Dover International Speedway on Friday.

The four-time defending Cup champion turned a lap of 155.736 mph at one of his favorite tracks. Johnson has five career wins on the 1-mile concrete oval -- one shy of his best at Charlotte and Martinsville -- and swept the races here last year. He was 16th earlier this year.

"This is certainly a step in the right direction for momentum," Johnson said. "Last weekend, we ran much better than where we finished. It stinks that we finished where we did, but there is nothing we can really do about it."

Johnson was 25th at New Hampshire and is sixth in the points standings entering Sunday's race. He turned a lap of 155.736 mph at one of his favorite tracks. Johnson has five career wins at Dover.

Clint Bowyer Takes First Chase Race at New Hampshire

Clint Bowyer grabbed his first victory of the season in the Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Sunday when Tony Stewart ran out of gas with two laps to go after dominating the later stages of the race.

It wasn't a surprise victory, as Bowyer had dominated the first part of the race and led 177 of the 300 laps overall.

But it was Stewart who led most of the final 100 laps, surviving a brief epidemic of yellow flags only to come up two miles short on fuel.

Stewart finished 24th, coasting ever-so-slowly across the finish line to complete the last of the 300 laps as Bowyer started his burnout not six car lengths behind him (right).

"I think I ran me out of fuel," a philosophical Stewart said after the race. "The guys are saying sorry for running me out of fuel, but I think I ran me out of fuel."

Denny Hamlin, victimized by a bump and a spin in one of the yellows, clawed back from 22nd place with less than 100 laps to go to finish second. Jamie McMurray was third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Finishing fifth was Kevin Harvick, who also had a subpar day until the very end.

Hamlin now leads the Sprint Cup Chase points, with Bowyer jumping from 12th to second, 35 points behind. Harvick is third, 45 points behind.

Followup: Chrysler fires 13 workers involved in drinking on the job, suspends two

Chrysler workers enjoying their break

A group of Chrysler employees have been in the news lately, causing a bit of a black eye for the automaker. Originally, a Detroit Fox affiliate snagged video of the UAW members really enjoying their break - by smoking weed and drinking beer. Chrysler reacted to the news swiftly, by identifying and suspending 15 employees who were ID'd in the clip. Now, after taking time to investigate the entire incident, Chrysler has put the hammer down - 13 of the Jefferson North Plant employees have been fired and the other two get an unpaid, one-month "vacation."

It's a shame that this happened, but it's good to see Chrysler respond so quickly. The automaker has issued a brief statement on the matter, which you can read after the jump.

Consider Denny Hamlin the 2010 NASCAR Chase Favorite

Denny Hamlin believes he's improved as a driver through each the past two seasons.

"Every year you expect yourself to be better than you were the previous year," Hamlin said in February before the Daytona 500. "Without a doubt, I know in my mind that I'm better than I was in 2008 and in 2008 I was better than I was in 2007."

The stats back Hamlin up. Piloting the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11, Hamlin wheeled to a single win amid 12 top-fives and 18 top-tens in 2007. Last year, Hamlin upped his game to a win total of four with 15 top-fives and 20 top-tens -- good for a fifth-place finish in the series standings.

"I think everyone knows on a competitive level we're better every single year," said Hamlin in February. "Last year was just almost good enough performance-wise to win a championship, so what does that mean for 2010?"

Lamborghini releases fourth teaser ahead of Paris debut

Lamborghini paris motor show teaser #4
Lamborghini's Paris Motor Show teasers - Click above for high-res image gallery

We're only a few short days away from the 2010 Paris Motor Show and of all the automakers teasing their showgoing concepts and debuts, perhaps none have been as elusive as Lamborghini. After releasing three teaser images of its forthcoming Paris reveal, Automobili Lamborghini has just sent out this fourth shadowy image, hinting at what we'll be seeing in just a couple of days. Enough already.

Originally, we thought Lambo was simply teasing its new Jota supercar - the replacement for the aging Murciélago. However, further reports indicated that Lamborghini would be unveiling two new cars in Paris: the Jota, as well as a mystery car only known internally as "83X." To add to the confusion, a later report from Auto Guide stated that we wouldn't be seeing the highly anticipated Jota. Instead, a new technology concept would take the stage, crushing our highest hopes of some supercar hotness.

At this point, we're crossing our arms and tapping our feet out of impatience. Whatever Lamborghini has in store for the Paris show, we'll know for certain before the week's end. Have a look through our gallery below to see all of the Raging Bull teasers.

Cardboard Smart ForTwo
Cardboard Smart ForTwo - Click above for high-res image gallery

Sometimes, the jokes write themselves. Artist Sarah Illenberger has partnered with Smart and the packing gurus at CD Cartondruck AG to build the world's first ForTwo hemmed in high-quality reusable cardboard. Both the exterior and the interior of the car will be decorated with heaps of the recyclable material, and oddly enough, Smart says that it's pulling the stunt to disprove the notion that its products aren't disposable. We're having a hard time wrapping our heads around that one. The project will also serve to highlight Smart's infatuation with urban design.

Illenberger plans to use her experience producing art installations for the editorial departments of magazines like Style, Vanity Fair and The New York Times Magazine to create a unique look for the ForTwo. According to the press release, the car will come clad in a pixilated camouflage pattern called Eco-Flage. The creation will be on display at this year's Paris Motor Show from September 28 to October 17. Hit the jump to see the full press release.

Audi ready to play hot odds: A1 S-Line, S1, RS3 and RS7 on deck

Audi A1

Audi's lineup is expanding so quickly you'd think its cars were spawning new models by mitosis. In a few days at the Paris Motor Show we'll be seeing the newest hot addition to the A1 range: the 185-horsepower 1.4 TSFI with thrust provided by a twin-charged four cylinder. That's not the S1, it just has the S-Line package thrown on for racy looks. Next year, the S1 itself will step forward, with the Golf GTI's turbocharged 220-hp engine sitting up front. It is a sure bet to shave serious time off the TSFI's 6.9-second run from zero to 62 miles per hour.

After that comes the Audi RS3, using the same 340-hp, five-cylinder turbo from the TT RS. Sub five-second runs to 62 mph are in the offing, and its 250 kph (155 mph) top speed can be raised to 280 kph (174 mph) for a nominal fee. Then, at the Frankfurt Auto Show in the fall, the RS7 Sportback takes a bow. Powering the four-door fastback will be the 4.0-liter, 550-hp twin-turbo V8 that'll be shared with the 2011 Bentley Continental GT. That would put it about 100 horses clear of the rumored output in the S7 we should see next week in Paris, and the V8 is said to be 20 percent more fuel efficient than the 5.0-liter V10 in the RS6.

NASCAR Warns Clint Bowyer's Team Over Technical Inspection

Close is apparently close enough when it comes to NASCAR's technical inspection team. So the sanctioning body, in what is part "courtesy call" and part "wake-up call," is warning the Richard Childress Racing team that its No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer was dangerously close to failing inspection following the Sept. 11 regular-season finale at Richmond, Va.

NASCAR officials are scheduled to meet with team representatives Tuesday to inform RCR of their concern and they've held the car at their Concord, N.C., Research and Development facility since it was impounded following the race at Richmond International Raceway two weeks ago.

Although the car did pass inspection, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Tuesday, "The body was very close to the tolerances permitted and we want to point out to them how close it is. This is standard procedure.''

Poston said the only reason the car has remained at NASCAR's R&D center is because travel schedules didn't allow for an expedited meeting. Bowyer won Sunday in New Hampshire, the opening round of the 10-race Chase playoff, to vault from 12th in the standings to second.
